Gymnema Sylvestre and its Effect on Diabetes
Gymnema sylvestre is a vine like plant, similar to milkweed, that grows in the tropical forests of India. Gymnema sylvestre has been used for centuries in other countries to treat diabetes and other diseases. The leaves of the Gymenema sylvestre plant naturally contain a substance that reduces blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin production in the pancreas. In a study published by The Journal of Ethnopharmacology in 1990, it was also found that Gymnema sylvestre also had the ability to repair and regenerate the cells in the pancreas that are responsible for producing insulin (1).
During a separate study by the same research team in 1990, it was found that using Gymnema sylvestre showed improvement on both type 1 and type 2 diabetics. The study lasted about 2 years. The researchers found that, after taking Gymnema sylvestre, the type 2 diabetics had significant reductions in blood glucose levels. As a result, all the participants that were type 2 diabetics were able to lower their amount of oral medication and almost 25% of the study participants were able to discontinue traditional oral medication and maintain blood sugar levels with only Gymnema sylvestre. The type 1 diabetics found similar results to the type 2 diabetics. All of the type 1 diabetics that participated in the study were able to lower their dosage of medication while taking Gymnema sylvestre. Additionally, it was found again that Gynmema sylvestre did have the ability to repair or regenerate the cells that produced insulin in the pancreas. (1)
