Hi Holly,

If you have high HDL, my props to you as this is a good thing. For women, we are aiming for HDL to be above 50. If your level is above this, then you are doing great.

The reason this is a good thing is because HDL, aka. our Healthy cholesterol, helps to deliver the cholesterol in our bloodstream back to our liver where it can be processed and removed from our body. The type of cholesterol that we want to be lower is LDL, or Lousy cholesterol, because this type moves the cholesterol to our arteries where it can cause plaque buildup and block our blood flow.

Diet can help to influence both types of cholesterol, though some of us have more of a hereditary influence making it it very challenging to improve our numbers. If you have any questions on the dietary aspect, please feel free to send any questions my way or visit this blog:

I find it odd that the higher the better on your HDL cholesterol. I guess that when we say cholesterol as a negative it is always about the LDL variety. But, no matter how high the HDL number, it's good for you!

Rex, the reason the HDL cholesterol is so much better for us than LDL cholesterol is because the HDL is believed to transport blood cholesterol and plaque right out of our arteries. Far better than the LDL which deposits cholesterol and plaque in our arteries.

Also as a side note, HDL and LDL are not actually cholesterol, rather lipoproteins necessary to carry the cholesterol throughout our bloodstream.

I certainly hope this helps to clarify for you.

In health and happiness,

Jessica Corwin, RD
