Russian Artist Tattooed his Cat!

By Bri Luginbill More Blogs by This Author

This week a Russian artist decided to give his cat a tattoo - cool or cruel? What do you think?

Seriously. No joke. This guy actually gave his cat a tattoo matching his own. Spanned from one shoulder to the other, it reads "Carpe Diem" in a stylish scripted font.

A video of the tattooing procedure was posted online, went viral and created quite a stir. Some people are saying it is “cruel and disgusting.” While a supporter argued, “People pierce their kids' ears and sign consent to let their kids get tattoos.

This isn't the first tattooed cat either. People often get numeric tattoos on their cats so they are able to be identified if they are lost. So, if you think about it that way...this tattoo could be seen as an identification tattoo, just on a larger scale. Maybe?

But, that could be a stretch.

One thing that everyone should know, is that the cat does not undergo any pain. In the video, it shows the cat being anaesthetized before the tattooing begins. So unlike the people who want ink, this gorgeous Sphynx kitty shouldn’t have felt anything during the procedure. Actually, watching the video he seemed pretty relaxed. (However, I was only able to watch a little bit of it because needles make me queasy.)

Since posting, the video has been taken down, so unfortunately, you'll just have to take my word on the way the procedure went.

What do YOU think? Is it okay to give an animal a tattoo? Yea or Neigh?

  • What is our world coming to? This is abuse if ever there was abuse. This is a selfish male who desires attention. The cat had no choice. The cat should be taken from him. After all what will he decide to do next????

  • It's not on the same level as tail-cutting or ear-cropping or declawing like some pet owners do, but it still feels really wrong because the animal had no say in the matter.

  • At least he had the decency to use anesthesia. I'm not sure how I feel about the act itself, but my worry is that other (read: stupider) people will see this and be inspired to do it - and they won't be as careful...

  • I gave my stance on the issue at some length on the vetionx facebook fan page ( www.facebook.com/vetionx ), but in summary. I don't think this particular case is abusive. In fact, I think it's pretty cool. I don't think unskilled people should attempt to do this to their cats at home, but if someone idiot decided to go ahead and try it, I wouldn't blame this guy for their cruelty and stupidity.

  • wow it does look kind of cool when it's done but seeing the cat on it's back is not cool. I would never ever subject my pet to this type of procedure. It's gutsy!

  • I think it is animal abuse plain and simple.

  • I don't care if the cat was put under or not. If I ever find this guy, I'll bash his skull in.
