New Mandatory Spay And Neuter Law in Phoenix, Arizona

By — One of many Cat Breeds blogs on SmartLivingNetwork.com

People in Jackson County of Phoenix, Arizona are proposing a new mandatory spay and neuter law as well as licensing law for their cats, but while this may seem a radical step, apparently the people of Jackson county aren't alone.

More than 32 states now  have mandatory spay/neuter laws where the minimum requirement is to have any animals adopted from animal shelters to be spayed and neutered - a number many cat lovers would like to increase.  With the cat population on the increase, shelters are filling up and spay and neuter is an important step in addressing feline overpopulation.

Shelters have confessed that up to 50 cats are being brought in during the course of a day and according to statistics, 80% of the 2,945 cats at shelters in Jackson county were euthanized in 2010. Given this, it's difficult understand why any state wouldn't adopt spay and neuter laws, but what about the other bit -  licensing cats?

Some owners love letting their cats roam around outside and I personally understand this as my family cats have always been indoor/outdoor kitties. However,  with this said, allowing your cats outdoors can be risky and  asking owners to license their cats seems a reasonable requirement considering.

With a license, cats who wander too far stand a far better chance of being returned if they are found. Jackson County Commissioner C.W. Smith said he is a cat owner, but he has had problems with roaming cats. He couldn’t tell whether they were feral or pets.

For one, I agree. People need to take responsibility for their own cats. Spaying or neutering and putting a license on your cats are small steps that can make a big difference.

What’s YOUR opinion? Is a mandatory law for spaying and neutering a good thing? Or is this requirement unfair to poor owners?
