Freddy The 18 Year Old Cat Learns To Swim

Welcome to The Scratchpad –the cat news blog for cat lovers!

This week: turns out some cats DO like water!

As most cat owners can attest, few cats like getting wet.

My parent’s cat used to squirm and scratch at us every time she got a bath – but not Freddy! He embraces the water and actually adventures out and goes looking for some he can play in. His owner, Brenda Meyers, says she first discovered his love for water when she found him splashing about in the toilet bowl.

"He went under the lid and seat and all you could see was his behind and him on his tippy toes."

However, since the toilet isn't the cleanest place to play, Brenda did her best to keep Freddy from venturing into the toilet again. She decided to fasten Velcro onto the lid and THOUGHT he wouldn’t be able to open it now. But he foiled her plan! She found him in the toilet, yet again.

Freddy the CatAfter that, Brenda made sure to keep the bathroom door closed at all times, but to satisfy his water obsession started pouring water into a huge bowl for him to play in.  It worked. He loved this so much, he would even play while he ate his dinner. Little did he know, things were about to get even better. A little while later, Brenda’s family had a swimming pool put in.

Brenda told reporters that she was little worried because the water was so deep and she knew Freddy would want to go in Freddy the Catthe pool. She didn’t let him at first. But when she saw him look at the pool, his "eyes were as big as saucers."

So, she found a compromise.  She let Freddy swim in the pool with the safety of a life vest. He wasn’t a fan of the straps or the Velcro. He disliked being constrained while swimming. However, she wants to make sure he's safe, so he's required to wear it at all times in the pool. Now, Freddy splashes around as happy as could be and goes for regular dips each morning!

Just goes to show you - cats are never too old to find something new that they love to do! Or to take a dip in the pool. ;)

Does YOUR cat enjoy the water?

  • Freddy looks terrified in that top picture! Kind of like an arachniphobe being thrown in a coffin full of spiders.

  • That's pretty darn awesome. I just hope they rinse him off before he licks himself and whatnot, so the chlorine doesn't hurt him while he's grooming.
