Earning Your Way to Free Rewards

By Kristin McKinney More Blogs by This Author

I love getting free things. Who doesn't? Sure, most of the time I like the feeling you get when you've worked hard for something and then get to reap the rewards, but it's still nice to get something for free every once in awhile. For instance, on the 4th of July, I went with some friends to a parade, and, while waiting for it to start, we found a place handing out free lemonade and snacks. It was one of the highlights of our day.

Wouldn't it be awesome if there were sites or apps were you could be rewarded with free things for doing stuff you already do? Well, it turns out there are such places. Through the use of different apps and sites you can earn points that can be turned into gift cards or used to win different items. Here are some of the different places I've started using:

1. Swagbucks:

I've been using this site for about a year now and just got my first gift card through it a few weeks ago. I was able to turn 1,500 points into a $15 dollar gift card from Amazon. With Swagbucks, there are several different ways you can earn points.

  • Toolbar: With this, you can set swagbucks as your default search browser, and every time you search, there's a chance of earning points. This is how I got most of my mine.

  • Surveys: There are tons of different survey opportunities you can take. Some are easy and quick. Others take longer, but you get more points.

  • Shop & Earn: Through this, you can earn points for shopping online at specific stores. Different places offer a different number of points for each dollar you spend, and for some stores, it's only for specific items.

  • Special Offers: There are many different special offers where you can earn points for signing up for things, purchasing items, etc. Some of this stuff is free; some of it isn't.

With this site, it could take a long time to get a gift card. It really depends on what you do to get points. It took me a long time because I mostly just used the toolbar and did a few special offers and surveys. If you do a lot of shopping online, then the shop & earn will probably help a lot.

2. Inbox Dollars:

This site rewards you for doing things online. Here, you can do activities like take surveys, play games, and shop online. Each time you do one you earn money. You can have new survey opportunities delivered right to your email.

3. Mpoints:

This is an-app based rewards program, and it's used with different apps. I just recently started using this one. Here are a list of some of the apps that use this system.

  • Crackle: This app let's you watch movies and TV shows for free. Most of the stuff on it is old or slightly obscure, but there's still some good stuff to pick from. You get points every time you go into the app, watch something, add something to your watchlist, etc.

  • Nexercise: This is a great app because it's a great motivator to work out. You're not only earning points for free items, but you're also exercising because of it. There are a lot of different ways to earn points with this app. You earn for exercising, for how long you exercised, how often, etc.

  • With this app you earn Mpoints for searching for definitions, looking at the thesaurus, clicking on the word of the day, and other things.

It may take longer to get a gift card from this app because the ones that are actually worthwhile cost a lot of points, but I like that, with this one, pretty much everything I can do to earn points, I already do. Also, as long as you use the same email, when signing up in each app, all of your points will be together.

4. Pocket Change:

This is another app that I was recently introduced to. Most of the apps that use this are game apps. Also, from what I've seen, this is more of an Android thing, and so there aren't as many apps through iPhone yet.

  • Nexercise: Right now this is the only app that I use with this point system. Every time you work out you get pocket change. Sometimes they have other activities you can do to earn some extra change. Such as posting to facebook or twitter.

5. Shopkick:

This app gives you points just for walking into a store. Each time you walk into one of the stores listed in shopkick, you earn kicks. You can also earn by making purchases at those stores. These kicks can be traded in for gift cards. Some of the places you can earn from are Target, Old Navy, Macy's, and Toy's R' Us.

6. Ibotta:

Through this app, you get rewarded for grocery shopping. There are a variety of items to choose from. For each offer, you will have to do something like answer a question, learn trivia, or watch a video. Each thing you do is worth money, anywhere from 25-50 cents. After you purchase the item, you take a picture of your receipt and upload it to the app. Once the receipt has been authenticated, you get the money. Once you have earned up to $5, you can withdraw the cash. Some of the stores that participate are Meijer, CVS Pharmacy, Kroger, Target, and Walmart.
