The Rage of BB Creams

By Victoria Swanson More Blogs by This Author

Every makeup-loving girl's dream - BB CREAMS! So, what is it? BB Cream is the all-in-one beauty balm that serves a wide variety of purposes in a one pump application, creating an out-the-door look that is taking American women by storm!

The original BB Cream was created by a dermatologist in Germany in the 1950's to help her patients recover from facial skin treatments. They have been the staple for Korean women for years, and Asian women took to BB Creams like wild fire. Flawless skin has always been a desired trait of American women, and now, with BB Creams, we have the opportunity to achieve it.

BB Cream provides SPF protection, helps to minimize skin flaws (including blemishes and sun spots), hydrates the skin, brightens, smoothes, and enhances. Think of BB Cream this way: SPF, Foundation, and Moisturizer in one! Yep, that simple!

Personally, I would encourage you to go with an SPF of 30, or higher, and one that contains Titanium Dioxide, and Zinc Oxide to help protect your skin from the damaging UVA/UVB sun rays.

We know women everywhere are seeking out a BB Cream to add to their makeup routine, but which ones should you consider trying?

For the Budget Consciousness

Are you on a budget? No worries, every makeup company is meeting the demands of this sought after product.

Maybelline - Dream Fresh BB Beauty Balm / Price: $7.49

8 in 1 Skin Protector

* Blurs Imperfections * Enhances * Brightens * Adjusts to Skin-Tone * Smoothes * Hydrates * SPF 30 Protects - with Titanium Dioxide * 0% Oils and Other Heavy Ingredients

TESTED: I tested Maybelline's BB Cream to see how it worked. I chose Maybelline because I am a fanatic about sunscreen, and I refuse to wear anything less then an SPF 30. Plus it had Titanium Dioxide in it. The balm was creamy, so creamy, that when I squeezed the tube it came out quickly, and I had to wash the excess down the drain. It blended nicely on my face while applying it, making my skin feel and look smoother. However, my sun-spots and acne scars were still visible, much to my chagrin. There were 5 shades to choose from, and I chose the Light/Medium (110) shade. Overall, the results were pretty good, the texture was light, it went on smooth, and blended nicely.

CoverGirl - Smoothers BB Cream / Price: $7.99

Moving On Up

These BB Creams are drugstore worthy, offer more than their budget counterparts above, and won't break the bank.

Olay – Fresh Effects BB Cream / Price: $14.99

6 in 1 Protector

* Refreshes * Brightens * Evens Skintone * Hydrates * Smoothes * Protects SPF 15 – Titanium Dioxide * No Oil or PABA

Lumene - Vitamin C Plus Illuminating Anti Age BB Cream / Price $14.99

8 in 1 Anti Aging

*Vitamin C Preserves Collagen Fibers * Illuminating * Anti-Aging * SPF 20 – Octinoxate * Minimizes Imperfections * Brightens * Diminishes Hyperpigmentation * Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Department Store Luxury

What budget? Clinique and Estee Lauder offer BB Creams that go above and beyond expectations.

Clinique - Age Defense BB Cream / Price $37.00

8 in 1 Age Defense

* Cream Conceals * SPF 30 - Titanium Dioxide * Reduces Appearance of Lines and Wrinkles * Antioxidants * Soothes Skin * Long-Wearing * Oil Control * Brightens

TESTED: I am a Clinique fan and have been using their products faithfully for over 7 years. So, of course, I couldn't wait to try their BB Cream. It is much thicker than I expected, and the coverage goes on nicely. Unfortunately, it did nothing for my sun-spots or acne scars (URGH!), but it settled nicely into my fine lines and wrinkles, giving somewhat of a smooth appearance. There are 3 shades to choose from. I used Shade 02 which looked very dark, but I found that it matched pretty well to my skin tone.  Overall, I liked the way it held up all day long and the appearance it gave.

Estee Lauder

Estee Lauder – Anti-Oxidant BB Creme / Price $39.00

6 in 1 Daywear

* Antioxidant * Hydration * Oil Free * Illumination * Minimizes Flaws * SPF 35 * Evens Skintone

I hope this offers some insight on the BB Cream craze!

  • Now I have to go get me one to try, I have such bad luck choosing the correct face creams that I am tired of it. Thanks for the post.

  • Hi Christine~ I have to tell you it really is a trial-n-error approach to finding the right one. I would start with the cheaper versions first to get an idea of the feel, texture, and coverage. I plan on trying the Lumene one next. I love the fact that it has Vitamin C in it. Vitamin C is the perfect antioxidant for skin!

  • I use CG Smoothers BB cream, it works better and replaced my Maybelline Pure Stay foundation that was discontinued (hate when that happens!)
