The Obsession with Altering Our Bodies

By

The body modifying phenomenon is not that old, but it is definitely one of the most trending ritual of the millennials. In this fat-activism and #loveyourself era, where everybody should be happy about their appearance and accept themselves for who they are, it seems that more and more people are opting for body modifications now more than ever. Before cosmetic surgeries, plastic surgeons were used to treat excess skin of someone who went through weight loss. Botox, for instance, has been shown to help with conditions such as chronic migraines, excessive sweating, Bells palsy, and perhaps evenmajor depression. Now, it is all about being the better version of yourself. How can you #loveyourself but at the same time undergo cosmetic alteration? Well, according to experts, it is physically, financially and emotionally easier now than it was before.

rn

According to ASPS, 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures were done last year. The top 5 are Breast Augmentation (up by 4% from 2017), Liposuction (up by 5%), nose reshaping (down 2%), eyelid surgery (down 1%) and tummy tuck (about the same).

Breasts augmentation is one of the rising modification surgery among the women. With innovations like vacation breasts promising women with bigger breasts for a temporary amount of time. So if you are someone that needs that beach bod, with bigger cleavage, vacation breasts are the way to go. However, dont get too excited yet, Dr. Victoria Karlinsky, who specializes in breast augmentation, breast lifts, tummy tucks, and facial cosmetic surgery, warns women against these quick procedures that often leave clients unhappy. If a woman desires a breast enlargement, in my opinion, it makes no sense to spend money on a temporary augmentation. If a patient is a good candidate to have her breast enlarged; with implants or fat, she should just go ahead with the procedure she explained.

rn

Are vacation breasts worth it? Dr karlinsky thinks not. As a cosmetic surgeon, I can certainly agree that there will be plenty of women who will be very interested in this temporary augmentation. I think a lot will depend on how affordable it is. As a woman, personally, if I wanted to have bigger breast, it would make no sense to me to spend money on this temporary enlargement.

rn

It is actually comical. Imagine: you go and get your breasts enlarged before a vacation, you buy new bathing suits to accommodate your new breasts, but as the days go by, they get smaller and smaller and the top becomes looser and looser. What are you supposed to do? Oh no!

rn

It is hard to talk about cosmetic surgeries and not mention the Kardashian family. We all remember the time when Kim Kardashian shocked the world with her appearance in the Paper magazine showing the famous curves. That led to the debate whether her large buttocks are a natural phenomenon or a result of some good Photoshop and fat-filled syringes. Nonetheless, her photo inspired women to have that curvy bod and that, little bit of fat is good for you. The question is does it look real? Certainly, the Paper magazine images do not look real, says Dr. Karlinsky. She looks incredibly thin in the waist and has absolutely no body fat. I cant imagine anyone having enough body fat to create something like that. She added.

rn

Karlinsky adds that Khloe, who already has an accentuated lumbar spine that curves nicely, would have no trouble filling out her already curvaceous behind.

rn

"When somebody [like Khloe] has that natural 'C' curve, it's easy to augment," says Karlinsky, adding that the work was "beautifully done." Many professionals like Karlinsky, are calling out the magazine cover shot for being heavily distorted using Photoshop.

rn

Another celebrity-fueled cosmetic trend is face fillers. Who wouldnt want the ability to erase those wrinkles and loose face skin? The concept of getting old is not appreciated in todays world and according to Dr Karlinksy, I think an important message to carry through is that people shouldn't be scared of fillers if [they] feel that the treatment is right for [them]. Be realistic with your expectations, and don't go overboard. When you have that idea in your mind, then you won't go wrong."

rn

Many people confuse Filler and Botox. To help with better understanding of what is a Filler, Dr Karlinsky says, As we get older, most of us will start to lose bone volume, fat, muscle tone, and skin elasticity goes away. As a result, your face sort of ends up shrinking."

rn

"Filler has become a great answer to replete volume where it's needed" She added.

rn

Whereas the Botox does completely different things. The only thing common in Fillers and Botox is that they are both delivered in a syringe. Botox helps to eliminate wrinkles that come from muscular contractions by keeping those muscles from moving. Filler can help to smooth over wrinkles that have already formed," says Karlinsky. While some wrinkles may be too deep to be treated with Botox, rest assured that filler can address the issue. Additionally, Botox takes a few days to kick in, whereas the results of Fillers are immediate.

rn

Some of the most popular areas where filler is injected are in the lips, in the cheeks, in the temples, and what is popularly known as laugh lines around the mouth. "We sometimes have to fill the temples when a client has lost a lot of weight, and their head takes on a weird shape," adds Karlinsky. "There are multiple areas they can be used to improve the look of the face, because a fuller appearance always looks more youthful and rejuvenated."

rn

The trend of fillers can also be traced back to celebrities. In 2015, Kylie Jenner famously admitted that her plumped lips were the result of fillers, after intense media and fan speculation.
On an episode ofKeeping Up With The Kardashians, she said: "I have temporary lip fillers. It's just an insecurity of mine, and it's what I wanted to do." She also said: "I want to admit to [having my lips filled], but people are so quick to judge me on everything."

rn

Kim Kardashian West has openly admitted to trying Botox in the past. In a 2010 interview, she said: "I'm not totally against plastic surgery. I've tried Botox before. That's the only thing that I've done."

rn

People idolized celebrities to the extent that they are ready to even modify their bodies. It is not a mystery why we see a rise in these body altering trends.

Brigitte Segura (Editor-in-chief of the fashiondailymag) met Dr. Victoria Karlinsky. She wrote Dr. K got to know me, what I do, and what makes a difference in my life. As a female plastic surgeon, she knows what women are dealing with firsthand, understands a face paced NYC lifestyle, and is very sensitive to womans hang-ups- and admits to some herself. She considered my diet, social commitments, lifestyle, work, and suggested some possibilities, with some treatments she had tried herself. The surprise prescription? The good ol BO + filler combo. Yup- injectables from a cosmetic surgeon. Though what Dr. Karlinsky prescribed was nothing new- the approach to refresh and faux re-sculpt in utilizing the injectable combo was new in my books. She took the time to put the BO + filler combo in the correct pace, which enable my eyebrows to go back to their designated spot a spot few years ago! A sculpted fresh, a little tighter here, a little fuller here- a couple of lines drawn on my face along the way + no pain. Hence, the WOW, your brows are looking great and other random compliments came about.

rn

Its worth considering a female cosmetic surgeons opinion to refresh and lift, as their trained eye yields specialized options that makes the difference in the treatment. They are going to understand your female needs, and artistically sculpt your face. The consultation is a big part of the process, and with the added comfort of a plastic surgeon applying precision to injectables, the odds are in your favor. She added.
