Wearing What You Want, When You Want: A Guide

By Breana Ostrander More Blogs by This Author

"That's always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people want to be around someone because they're pretty. It's like picking your breakfast cereals based on color instead of taste.”

(John Green, Paper Towns)

I'm not what one would call a “snappy” dresser. If you're around me for any extended period of time you'll notice my consistent use of messy buns, borrowed plaid shirts, and boots that may or may not be meant only for barn use. (I'm not sure.) When I say I'm not fashionable, I mean I remember once in high school a girl identified me as the girl who 'never really matches, but it's in a cute way'. Sure, I can throw on leggings, an over-sized sweater, and some semi-tall boots with the most mediocre of sorority girls, but I think you can all agree when I say that doesn't really count.

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure why it matters that much. If Hillary Clinton has taught us one thing, it's this: The things in your head are more important than the things on your body. So here's my guide to wearing what you want, when you want to wear it.

If you want to go out with your friends, but you don't want to get dressed up...

Don't. Wear sweatpants. Wear jeans that haven't been washed in a couple of weeks. Add a stretched out waffle shirt on top. Why does it matter? If you're going out with friends, one of two things is going to happen: They're going to get drunk and forget what you wore, or they're not going to care because they're your friends, and they love you regardless.

If you have to go to class, but it's cold outside...

Wear those really embarrassing puffy coats that go down to your shins. If someone judges you, remain happy in the fact that you're basically wearing a cozy sleeping bag and they're wearing a pea coat that definitely isn't wind proof.

If you have to go to work, but you don't want to mess with your hair...

What do you think french braids were made for? Problem solved.

If you're late and don't have time to put on makeup...

Forget about makeup today. Here's a commonly forgotten fact: People are pretty without makeup. It's true. Just because you started wearing it when you were in middle school, and you're now so attached to your eyeliner that you have a pet name for it, does not mean that your actual face has lost any of its initial attractiveness.

If you are going on a date with your best friend...

Going to a movie, grabbing a drink, or something like that? For this, maybe you feel like dressing up, maybe you don't. If you do, hooray! Since you've been wearing exactly what you felt like wearing all week, you have a clean dress ready for this occasion.

If your favorite shoes are old and worn out...

Wear them anyways. Don't throw them away just because every person that sees you wearing them comments on their threadbare appearance. They're your favorite shoes, and you're the one that is wearing them, so I think that makes it your business alone.

There are a lot of things in life to be stressed out about; what you look like at every moment of the day is not one of them. If you want to get dressed up once or twice during the week, then more power to you. If not, you have that much more time to procrastinate in the morning. So, unless you have actually been wearing the exact same outfit for a week straight, there's no reason to worry.
