Protect Your Eyes This Spring and Summer

While many of us focus on eating healthfully and exercising regularly, we may neglect one of our most valuable assets: our eyesight. Now that spring is here, with summer to follow, there’s going to likely be a lot more sun, and you should take the time to avoid sun glare, get your eyes checked regularly, and be more aware of how you’re treating your eyes in general. Taking certain steps to protect and care for your eyes is essential for maintaining good eye health. Follow these tips and enjoy a lifetime of healthy vision:

  • Visit your optometrist. How often depends on your age and what symptoms you experience, but adults should generally get their eyes checked at least every two years.

  • Wear protective eyewear when work, chores, or sports put you at risk of an eye injury. More than 80% of eye injuries occur in the home or while playing sports, so wear safety or sports glasses whenever possible.

  • Take care to avoid eyestrain. Though eyestrain has not been found to cause permanent damage, it can cause headaches, blurry vision, difficulty focusing, and other avoidable symptoms. When working on the computer, take plenty of breaks, make sure you’re working in good light, decrease the brightness of your monitor, blink often, and pick a comfortable chair.

  • Wear sunglasses in the summer. UV exposure can increase the risk for cataracts and macular degeneration, so choose sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays.

  • Eat a balanced diet. Leafy greens such as kale and spinach, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon and tuna, and citrus fruits and juices all contribute to good eye health. In addition, a healthful diet can deter eye-damaging diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

  • Steer clear of tobacco. Smoking increases the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and optic nerve damage—just another reason to kick the habit!

  • Use window film in your home to control sun glare, which isn’t just incredibly irritating--it can also cause headaches, disorientation, and eye pain as well as disabling your vision temporarily and reduces visual contrast. Specialized window films can be a real vision-saver, both at home and at the office.
