January Beauty Review

By Claire Franklin More Blogs by This AuthorFrom the Looking Good Blog Series

I have been a makeup junkie for most of my adult life. I’ve never given preference to one brand over another, and subsequently I’ve tried a lot of products by a lot of manufacturers throughout the years. Finally, however, I may have found the best cosmetic brand I’ve ever used, and if experience counts for anything, this statement is both bold and dramatic.

I’m talking about Bare Escentuals, the manufacturer of bareMinerals.

REVIEW: bareMinerals Purifying Facial Cleanser and Purely Nourishing Cream

Works Immediately. Relives Tightness and Dryness. Makes Skin Feel Velvety Soft.

I first heard about bareMinerals a number of years ago, while watching infomercials at three in the morning (I couldn’t sleep). I was immediately intrigued but decided I didn’t want to spend that much money on cosmetics, especially when drug store brands cost just a fraction.

I was wrong.

In November, I took a friend of mine for a makeover the day before her wedding. We went to a Bare Escentuals store in a nearby mall, and I was bowled over by the products. During my own makeover session (free of charge, by the way), the consultant wiped away my icky orange bronzer and proceeded to wash and moisturize my face with the bareMinerals Purifying Facial Cleanser and Purely Nourishing Cream. I felt the difference on my face immediately. That uncomfortable tight and dry feeling I’ve learned to live with most of my life was instantly relieved. When I touched my cheeks, they felt soft and velvety. I was ecstatic.

REVIEW: bareMinerals Get Started Kit

bareMinerals Get Started KitNatural Look. Glowing, Flawless Finish. Lasts for 4 Months. Mom Said "I haven't seen your skin look this nice in years!"

Next came the makeup, and while I don’t today look quite the way I did when the consultant made up my face, my skin has undergone a complete and total transformation. I rarely suffer from breakouts now, my skin tone is smooth and even and the makeup itself truly gives me a glowing, flawless finish. It doesn’t even look like I’m wearing cosmetics; I just look nice and natural with an elegant glow. My mom even noticed the difference and asked me two weeks ago what I’ve done to my skin lately. When I archly replied, “Nothing,” she said, “I haven’t seen your skin look this nice in years.”

To wrap this up, bareMinerals is worth every penny. The Get Started Kits come with everything you need to completely change your makeup routine and cost around $60. You don’t need much product, however, so expect this kit to last quite a while (I’m guessing around four months). For added convenience, Bare Escentuals sells a number of other pre-made kits with products like lipgloss, blush, eyeliner and mascara so you get the full effect. Skin care kits are also available, for normal, combination and dry skin. Trust me…if you feel it’s time to break away from your old cosmetics routine, you should give bareMinerals a try. I only wish I’d done so sooner.

REVIEW: L'Oreal Ever Style

No Damaging, Drying Alcohol. Smells and Works Great!

L'Oreal Ever Style Hair Care Line

Now a note about hair care. For the last six weeks, I’ve noted my hair has become very dry with damaged ends. This is unusual for me, and I tried everything to correct the problem. I switched shampoo and conditioner, bought a new curling iron and stopped blow drying my hair. To make a long story, I finally realized my hairspray was the culprit. It contained alcohol, and probably copious amounts that ended up damaging my hair. So I have some advice for you: steer clear of hairsprays that contain this ingredient. L’Oreal makes a nice alcohol-free option called Ever Style. It has a great smell to it, can be found in many chain retail stores and costs around $6 per bottle.

REVIEW: One 'n Only Argan Oil Repair Shampoo and Conditioner

one n' only Argan OilNoticeable Results. Smoothed My Damaged Hair. Brought Back the Movement and Shine.

While fretting over shampoos and conditioners, I accidentally stumbled upon a brand that has done wonders for my excessively dry hair. It’s called One ‘n Only Argan Oil and is derived from Moroccan argan trees. I selected the moisture repair shampoo and conditioner, and I can’t tell you how pleased I am with the results. My hair has movement, is shiny and has regained some of its former health (I still need a haircut to snip the damaged ends). Look for this product at Sally’s.
