Is it possible for children to grow out of asthma?

Our family physician had told us that when our son gets older he might "grow out" of his asthma. He had his 1st attack when he was 2 years old, and it was bad. The hospital that we took him to could not diagnose him. They sent him out by ambulance to another hospital an hour away and they took another set of x-rays and then confirmed he was having an asthma attack. Gave him breathing treatments and within 8-10 hours we were finally on our way home. He is now 6 and has at least 4-5 severe asthma attacks per year. If so, do you have any tips for finding relief? I'd love to know!
