Can't Live Without Your Phone? You May be a Nomophobiac.

Are you and your phone attached at the hip? Do you feel like you can't live without your it? Cellphones are becoming more of an obsession every day. Along with attachment comes the phobia called "nomophobia." What exactly is nomophobia?

Defining Nomophobia

Nomophobia is simply the fear of being  separated from your mobile phone. I know many people must have their phones on them at all times, but I never thought that there was a phobia for being away from one's phone. Although I thought that this phobia was "out there", it makes a lot of sense. With the growing use of technology comes the dependency on it. Today, the easiest tasks are done with the help of technology. So, take that away, and the fear arises.

Now, what exactly does nomophobia look like?


A person with nomophobia may feel anxious when:

  • Their phone has a low battery with no way to charge the phone
  • Seeing "no cellphone" signs
  • Having no signal
  • Having a broken or malfunctioning phone
  • Losing their phone
  • Thinking of the possibility of losing their phone
  • Their phone has been stolen or even thinking of it getting stolen
  • Any situation keeping the person from using their phone

Along with:

  • Getting panic attacks and negative physical symptoms when any of the above happens
  • Obsessively checking if their phone is with them and if it is charged

A Study of Nomophobia

A company called SecurEnvoy recently released a study that claims that of those who participated, 66 percent said they had it. SecurEnvoy also says that people, on average, check their phones 34 times a day, some even more. There was another study about four years ago that showed that 53 percent of participants had the fear of losing their cellphone.

With increased cellphone prevalence, people are using cellphones everywhere. In the SecurEnvoy study, researchers found that 75 percent of people even use their cellphones in the bathroom. Scott Miller-Farrugia from Coral Springs says that he brings his cellphone "into the bathroom instead of the newspaper." Some people even sleep with their phones under their pillow at night like a stuffed animal.

The mobile app company TeleNav Inc., released a survey last year that showed that "40 percent of people with iPhones said they'd rather give up brushing their teeth for a week than go without their phone." Why? Because of the growing dependency. Cellphones can now do more than just call and text. You can check your email, pay bills etc. This, in turn, makes a phone the most important thing to a person.

Of course, cellphones are a necessity, in most cases. If you get into a car accident or you need to get a hold of someone in an emergency, cellphones are a necessity. However, when panic ensues from being separated from your cellphone, you may need to evaluate that relationship.

Treatment for Nomophobia

Like any phobia, there are treatments to get over nomophobia. The most obvious form of treatment would be to see a therapist. A therapist can help you come to terms with your fear. Relaxation techniques are another way to treat it. Deep breathing, yogo, or muscle relaxation can help you cope with the emotional and physical symptoms of nomophobia.

Along with treatment, learn more about nomophobia. If you know more about the issue, the easier it will be to fight it.
