I read this article today about how some kids are being misdiagnosed as ADHD and it really hit home for me. It was mentioned in a report that a possible assesment would be done for my child when he turns 4 years old and I was really thrown back about that. First of all, he is the youngest child in my family and let's not forget that he is 3 YEARS OLD, but it was noticed that he had some difficulty sitting still for too long and he was running around looking at all the cool toys and that automatically says to them "Possible ADHD"?? This article really gave me something to think about and something to watch for.

Oh, ADHD....

If there is a serious problem - one that negatively impacts their ability to learn - with your child's ability to pay attention or sit still at school I DO think that parents and teachers should do something to help them. BUT I also think, like you said, they rush to that diagnosis and to harsh stimulant medications to quickly.

Having been diagnosed and treated at a young age myself, I can tell you, I felt "numb" on the meds for it. "Zombie-like" is a term that is frequently associated with the effects. In the end, my teacher actually told my parents he'd rather have me so eager to share I talk out of turn and have me laughing loudly at my friends jokes than to see me like that.

If you think you or your child has ADHD, I would strongly suggest trying something natural first.

My son felt that his 3 1/2 year old son was hyper and tried to slap the ADHD label on him. Being the first child he didn't know what to expect. My wife and I assured him that all was well and Austin was just being a normal 3 year old boy. Austin is very bright and very inquisitive. Luckily at his pre-school they agreed with our analysis and assured my son that Austin was normal and they they had trained staff to monitor this type of thing. Having been convinced my son now sees Austin as a normal active boy.... and all is well...

I have no doubt that all of my kids would be labeled ADHD if they went to school. To me, their kids, doing what kids doing, acting a little crazy and disobedient at times. When you shove 30 kids, acting like kids do, in a little room with one adult, how could we expect anything less than to have half of them come out labeled hyperactive, inattentive, or dysfunctional.

I think labeling people as ADHD right away is just an easy way out! There are a lot of people out there that always want to jump and label.
