Childhood and Adult ADHD Symptoms
Dr. Jeff Chamberlain explains some of the negative symptoms of ADHD in children and adults.
How's it going? Barnaby here with this HelloLife moment my bud Dr. Jeffrey Chamberlain, family medicine specialist, we've been talking about ADHD and how to diagnose it also some of the consequences of being diagnosed with ADHD. Let's talk about that. As a kid, there's a downside to suffer from this disorder.
Kids don't really understand what ADHD is, they don't understand that there is a medical issue with them, so a lot of times they are failing in school, they're not doing well, this causes self esteem problems. A lot of times they're not doing well in school so they lose interest in school and they think they're stupid. Sometimes because they act out other kids make fun of them so now there's social problems going on, so having uncontrolled ADHD can cause a lot of problems for a young kid.
So it's not a disorder to be ignored by parents thinking "well they'll grow out of it" because once you get on that path ridicule and lack of self esteem it could be a life long path that they are on.
Exactly, the damage that is done early on can take a long time to heal so trying to figure things out early and doing interventions to help the child out early is really important.
Right, and so on HelloLife.net what we've done is created a lot of videos about ADHD and you can scroll through the page and look at the headers and get to the bottom of the particular question you have. Let's bump it over to adults, what are the consequences of ADHD there?
So adults with ADHD, a lot of them if they are going back to school, they're having trouble with school, they're having trouble concentrating reading or paying attention during lectures. At work if there are a lot of things that they need to manage sometimes things start to fall apart, I see a lot of patients lose their job because of their problems with attention, sometimes the impulsiveness gets them in trouble not interacting with coworkers well. Then a lot of people with ADHD, I think it's because they can't. or they don't enjoy working for someone else's system, they work for themselves, they create a job and do interesting things. And a lot of times their business is going well in that sense, but then they aren't paying their bills, they didn't pay their taxes so now the IRS is after them.
Because you're not focused.
Because you're not focused and now their business is failing not because they don't do their job well but because they're not handling all these necessary things that need to take place when someone runs their own business.
Wow, so it is something that you really have to honor if you suspect that you suspect that you suffer from ADHD you should get diagnosed and get on some corrective path.
Alright, and in order to get all that information you're in the right place, it is HelloLife.net! Look at the videos under the specific headings and you'll get the answers you so desperately seek. Thanks doc.
