  It's a part, but not the only part. As pack animals, a lot of our make-up, and what we've come to recognize as "morality" - the sort of things most religions can agree on - is just common sense. When we act out against our pack, we're hurting ourselves as well. We don't need a book, god, or religion to tell us that. While cultural norms definitely play a role in the way we judge things, I'd have to think even cavemen would have plotted against and sought to remove a group member that murdered children. I don't think morals are necessarily for civilized society only.
  
  While these are weighed against whatever self-interested motivations for gain, status, ego, or even pleasure might be attached to murder, the potential backlash from the pack is not worth it to most people. Senseless murder is senseless murder, laws or no. Even an ungoverned society will judge the cases and act according to their judgement. 5/15

  What a great movie. I think Woody Harrelson is one of the most under-appreciated actors of our time.
  
  Solid points here, Erin. Basically what you're getting at is the reason why this film is purely fiction (at least at this point), but I also think that if violence was sanctioned by this larger heard with immunity for the perpetrators, many, many people would take full advantage. Never underestimate the craziness of seemingly normal folk - everyone loves a good rabble rousing. Iraq II was pretty good evidence of this. 5/15
