Great question. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes have genetic links (type 2 diabetes having a very strong genetic link). Though, some people do develop diabetes without any family history of it. It is important to remember that there are numerous genes responsible for diabetes, so it does not follow simple inheritance patters like eye color.

If you have family members with diabetes, then you are at an increased risk. If you do not have it already, it would be a good idea to make sure you start making healthy lifestyle changes now, instead of waiting for the disease to develop!
